10 Best Paris Street Food & Must-Try Cheap Eats
Paris is famous for fine dining, but some of the most mouthwatering food in the city is found at bakeries, market stalls and little sandwich counters. In this video we team up with Mark Wiens to explore the best street food and cheap eats in Paris, from a bakery kitchen to the market streets near Bastille.
Where we ate and what we tried
- Pain au chocolat at Blé Sucré: we went down into the kitchen to learn how the dough is laminated and rolled, then tasted what we made. For us it is one of the best chocolate croissants in Paris.
- Oysters and white wine at the Aligre market: two kinds of oysters with lemon and vinegar, paired with a crisp Loire Valley white.
- Charcuterie: rosette, ham and cured sausages on a board, eaten the French way with a fresh baguette.
- Pâtés and terrines from a local butcher: country pâté, green peppercorn terrine and Colleen’s favorite, rillettes. Pâté on a baguette is the perfect picnic.
- Quiche lorraine: eggs, cheese and bacon in a buttery crust, warm and easy to eat on the go.
- A cheese shop tasting: from mellow sheep’s milk cheese to one so ripe it was liquid inside.
- Croque-monsieur, upgraded: a sandwich shop serving a dozen versions of the French classic. We tried the traditional one, pastrami and truffle.
- Galettes and crêpes: a savory buckwheat galette loaded with chicken, ham and crispy cheese, then a sweet crêpe with banana, almonds and salted butter caramel.
Tips for eating street food in Paris
Markets like Aligre are at their best in the morning, so start early and come hungry. Pick up a baguette, some cheese and charcuterie and you have a perfect picnic for a park or the banks of the Seine.
