The Bubbles and the Beauty: Take a Sparkling Journey to Champagne
One of the things we love about living in France is how champagne is woven into the fabric of life here. Back in the states, champagne was something we saved for special occasions. Here in France, it transforms even small moments into celebrations, reminding us to treasure simple joys, like sharing a good meal with family and friends. To raise a glass of golden bubbles is to celebrate life itself.

The good news for travelers to Paris is that in less than two hours, you can be sipping champagne in its birthplace. Nestled in northeastern France, the Champagne region is, of course, renowned for its exquisite sparkling wine. But it’s also home to delicious food, architectural wonders, and beautiful landscapes. All of which make it a great destination for a day trip or overnight excursion. In this article, we’ll share our top tips to help you plan a VIP visit full of memories you’ll savor long after the bubbles fade.
Welcome to Champagne, France
The Champagne region of France offers rolling hills, lush vineyards, and charming villages, and the unique combination of climate and soil – the terroir as the winemakers say – that makes the wines here so special. Its history dates back to the Romans, and the area witnessed some of the heaviest fighting of World War I, and endured German occupation during World War II. It’s a storied place.
Wine production here is divided into five main areas: Aube, Côte des Blancs, Côte de Sézanne, Montagne de Reims, and Vallée de la Marne. Only wines from these areas can be called Champagne. Anything else is sparkling wine. The cool climate and chalky soils of the region create the ideal conditions for growing the three main grape varieties used in Champagne production: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier.

The city of Reims, with its prestigious Champagne houses and magnificent Gothic cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a fascinating city on its own. The town played an important role for French royalty, as 29 kings were crowned here between 1027 and 1825. The other major town, Epernay, known as the Avenue de Champagne, is lined with grand mansions and underground cellars housing millions of bottles of Champagne.
The history and origins of Champagne
Winemaking in Champagne goes back to the Roman era, when the region was first cultivated with vineyards. However, it wasn’t until the 17th century that Champagne truly made its mark on the world stage. The discovery of the secondary fermentation process, which puts the bubbles in bubbly, revolutionized the wine industry and turned this region into a sparkling wine powerhouse.
