Paris Costco vs. US Costco (What Surprised Us Most)
There are only two Costcos in the Paris area, so in this video we visit one to see how this American institution fits into French culture. In our Paris Costco vs US Costco comparison we answer the questions we had: does our American membership card work, is there a rotisserie chicken, is everything Kirkland, and is the 1.50 hot dog still on the menu?
What is the same
- Our American Costco card worked at the entrance.
- The layout feels just like home: electronics, kitchenware, giant teddy bears, clothes, flowers and a big Christmas section.
- The rotisserie chicken is there, on sale for about 4 euros when we filmed.
- Kirkland products are everywhere, including Colleen’s favorite shampoo.
- The food court has the hot dog and drink combo for 1.50 euros, plus pizza and the chicken bake.
What is different
The fresh and prepared food is where the French touch shows. We found tartiflette and choucroute ready to heat, whole cured hams, duck breast, sea snails and other seafood, gastronomic butter, Normandy whipped cream and a cheese section with raclette, Morbier, goat cheese and a truffle Saint-Nectaire. There are madeleines, mille-feuilles and calissons alongside donuts and American-style pancakes. The wine aisle carries Kirkland wines too, including a Gigondas for around 12 euros, but most French people still buy wine from their local caviste rather than a warehouse store.
Our verdict
It really is the same concept, with everything sold in large sizes, but the little differences make it fun to explore. In a city without a big car culture, though, getting bulk boxes home and finding space to store them is a real consideration. For homesick Americans, it is a comforting taste of home; for visitors, it is a fun look at how France adapts an American classic.
