🛏️ Where To Stay In Paris – Quick Overview

📍 Best Neighborhoods To Stay:  For most first-time visitors, we recommend three neighborhoods above all — Saint-Germain (6th), Le Marais (3rd/4th), and the Latin Quarter (5th). All three are central, safe, walkable, and full of cafés, restaurants, and atmosphere right outside your door.
🗼 For Iconic Views:  If views and a calmer pace matter more to you than dining variety, the Eiffel Tower area (7th) is beautiful and quieter at night.
🎯  City Center:  To be right in the geographic center of the city, the Louvre area (1st) puts you beside the Tuileries Garden, Palais Royal, and the best shopping.
⭐  Charming Away From Center: Montmartre (18th) is full of charm, but it sits away from the main sights and is built on a steep hill — wonderful to visit, harder to use as a base on a first trip.

Best Neighborhoods To Stay In Paris

Our Top 3 Picks

We’ve stayed all over the city, and for most travelers these three neighborhoods are the best areas to stay in Paris. They give you the best of Paris: central, safe, walkable, and alive with cafés and restaurants the moment you step outside.

🥖 Saint-Germain-des-Prés / 6th Arrondissement — Our #1 all-around pick

Saint-Germain is the Paris you’ve read about in novels — the elegant, intellectual heart of the Left Bank, where writers and artists like Sartre, de Beauvoir, and Picasso once held court in cafés like Les Deux Magots and Café de Flore. Today it’s refined and chic: art galleries, antique shops, designer boutiques, and some of the best people-watching terraces in the city, all a short walk from the Luxembourg Gardens, the Seine, and the Musée d’Orsay. It’s central, beautifully safe, and endlessly walkable. The trade-off is price — this is one of the more expensive areas to stay — and the evenings are sophisticated rather than rowdy. If you want one neighborhood that does everything well, this is it. See our favorite hotels in Saint-Germain

🛍️ Le Marais / 3rd & 4th Arrondissement — Best for charm, cafés & shopping

Le Marais is the neighborhood most people picture when they imagine Paris: cobblestone lanes, medieval mansions, independent boutiques, and café terraces on every corner. Because it survived Haussmann’s 19th-century demolitions, it feels older and more intimate than the grand boulevards — and it’s packed with great restaurants, bakeries, and shops. It’s lively but safe, and within walking distance of Notre-Dame and the Seine. Best for travelers who want atmosphere and energy right on their doorstep. See our favorite hotels in Le Marais

📚 Latin Quarter / 5th Arrondissement — Best for classic Left Bank romance

Home to the Sorbonne, the Panthéon, and the legendary Shakespeare & Company bookshop, the Latin Quarter is historic, literary, and full of life. Narrow medieval streets open onto the Luxembourg Gardens and the booksellers’ stalls along the Seine. It’s a little more casual and youthful than Saint-Germain next door, with plenty of affordable bistros mixed in. Best for return visitors, book lovers, and anyone who wants the timeless Left Bank feel without the top-tier price tag. See our favorite hotels in the Latin Quarter (confirm slug)

Two Central Neighborhood Options

These areas have some of our favorite hotels in Paris. They do come with a couple of honest caveats worth knowing before you book.

🗼 Eiffel Tower / 7th Arrondissement — Beautiful and calm, but quieter at night

The 7th is grand, leafy, and elegant, with the Eiffel Tower, the Musée d’Orsay, and Les Invalides on its doorstep. If your dream is to step out of your hotel and see the Eiffel Tower, this is the place. Be aware, though, that it’s a residential, embassy-heavy district: outside of the market street Rue Cler, it’s noticeably quieter than our top three, with fewer restaurants and lively cafés, and it can feel sleepy after dark. You’ll likely find yourself hopping the Métro to other neighborhoods for dinner. Choose the 7th for views and a peaceful, refined base — not for buzz and dining on your doorstep. Best for couples and travelers who prize calm. See our favorite hotels near the Eiffel Tower

🎨 Louvre / 1st Arrondissement — As central as Paris gets, with plenty around it

Stay by the Louvre and you’re in the geographic heart of the city — and far from short on things to do. The Tuileries Garden, the gardens and arcades of the Palais Royal, Place Vendôme, the boutiques of Rue Saint-Honoré, the Opéra Garnier, and the Seine are all within an easy walk, alongside no shortage of restaurants and cafés. The honest caveats: the blocks right around the museum and Rue de Rivoli are heavily touristed, and prices run high. But it’s a polished, convenient, lively base that lets you walk to most of central Paris. Best for travelers who want to maximize sightseeing and stay in the thick of it. Sacre-Coeur Cathedral Montmartre

Charming but Tricky

⛰️ Montmartre / 18th Arrondissement — The most charming, the most complicated

Montmartre is pure romance: a hilltop village of cobblestone lanes, ivy-covered houses, the white domes of Sacré-Cœur, the artists’ easels of Place du Tertre, and the best panoramic views in Paris. It’s where Picasso, Renoir, and Toulouse-Lautrec worked, and it still has a creative, bohemian soul that the rest of the city has mostly lost.

So why isn’t it a top pick? Two reasons that matter a lot for a comfortable trip:

  • Distance. Montmartre sits in the far north of the city, away from the main cluster of sights. Reaching the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, or the Latin Quarter means a real Métro ride each way — it adds up fast over a week.
  • The hill. Montmartre is built on a steep butte, with lots of stairs and inclines. That’s part of its charm, but it’s genuinely hard work with luggage or any mobility issues — a real consideration for many travelers. The base of the hill also shades into Pigalle, which is grittier and less appealing after dark.

Our honest advice: spend a half-day visiting Montmartre — it’s unmissable — but base yourself somewhere central. Stay here only if its village charm is your single highest priority and you’re comfortable with the hills and the commute. See our hand-picked Paris hotels & deals instead

How To Choose Where To Stay In Paris – What Travellers Should Know

How Paris is laid out.
The city is divided into 20 arrondissements (districts) that spiral outward from the center like a snail shell. Lower numbers (1–8) are the most central and where first-time visitors should focus. The Seine splits the city into the Right Bank (north) and the Left Bank (south) — both are wonderful; it’s a matter of taste, not safety.

Five things Travellers are often surprised by — book around these:

  1. Rooms are small. A “standard double” in Paris is smaller than a U.S. hotel room. If space matters, filter for “superior” or “deluxe” rooms — our partner hotels note this clearly.
  2. Air conditioning isn’t a given. If you’re visiting June–September, confirm AC before booking. We flag it on every hotel we recommend.
  3. Elevators are small or absent in old buildings. If stairs are an issue, look for “elevator” in the amenities — and think twice about hilly Montmartre.
  4. You’ll walk a lot. Staying central (1st–7th) means you can walk to most sights, which is the single biggest comfort upgrade for a Paris trip.
  5. You rarely need a car. The Métro and walking cover everything. Skip the rental and the hassles of parking.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions – Where To Stay In Paris

What is the best area to stay in Paris for first-time visitors?

For a first visit, we recommend Saint-Germain (6th), Le Marais (3rd/4th), or the Latin Quarter (5th). All three are central, safe, and walkable, with cafés and restaurants right outside your door and easy access to the Louvre, Notre-Dame, and the Seine.

Which Paris neighborhood is best for couples?

Saint-Germain and Le Marais are the most romantic all-around bases, thanks to their charm, cafés, and central location. For iconic Eiffel Tower views and a quieter, elegant feel, the 7th arrondissement is also lovely.

Is Montmartre a good place to stay?

Montmartre is one of the most charming and atmospheric parts of Paris, but it sits far north of the main sights and is built on a steep hill with many stairs — which means longer Métro rides and harder walking, especially with luggage. We recommend visiting Montmartre for an afternoon and basing yourself somewhere more central, particularly on a first trip.

Is it safe to stay in central Paris?

Yes. The central arrondissements (1–8) are safe and well-trafficked. As in any major city, stay aware of pickpockets around busy tourist sites and on the Métro.

How far in advance should I book a Paris hotel?

For spring (April–June) and fall (September–October), book 2–3 months ahead. Good-value central hotels sell out first. Most of our recommended hotels offer free cancellation, so you can book early and adjust later.

How do I get the exclusive Les Frenchies hotel perks?

Book through the links on our Exclusive Hotel Deals page and use the FRENCHIES code where noted. Each hotel’s specific perk and how to claim it is listed there.
